Can you feel it? The excitement over winter fading is palpable - spring emerges with fresh energy, renewal, and growth. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is associated with the wood element, which governs the liver and its paired organ, the gallbladder. This is the season to move, cleanse, and harmonize the body for balance and vitality. We enjoy longer days full of sunshine and optimism
Spring & TCM
• Liver as the Spring Organ – The liver is responsible for the smooth flow of qi and emotions. A healthy liver supports energy, creativity, and emotional well-being.
• Green is the Color of Spring – Eating green, leafy foods nourishes the liver and supports detoxification. Think spinach, kale, sprouts, and herbs.
• Sour Flavors for Balance – Incorporating sour foods like lemon, vinegar, and fermented vegetables can help regulate liver qi and prevent stagnation.
• Movement & Flexibility – Spring energy is all about movement! Gentle stretching, qigong, and outdoor walks help prevent stagnation and support liver function.
• Supporting the Spleen – While the liver thrives in spring, it can overpower the spleen (Earth element) if unbalanced. Avoid excessive raw and cold foods, and support digestion with warm, cooked meals.
Spring Renewal Practices
• Start Your Day with Lemon Water – Gently detoxifies and supports digestion.
• Eat More Greens – Light, fresh meals support the body’s transition from winter.
• Move & Breathe – Qigong, yoga, or outdoor walks keep liver qi flowing.
• Emotional Release – Journaling, creative projects, and deep breathing help process emotions tied to the liver, such as frustration or anger.
• Acupressure & Herbal Support – Points like Liver 3 (happy calm) can help regulate qi, while herbs like dandelion and milk thistle support liver detox
