Calm Starts Here: Finding Balance as We Step into Fall 🍂

There is something about Fall that naturally invites us to slow down.

The light begins to change. The mornings become cooler. Leaves begin their beautiful transformation, reminding us that change doesn't always have to be resisted. Sometimes we are simply being invited to release what has shifted and open space for what comes next.

On September 22, we welcome the Autumn Equinox—a turning point when day and night come close to balance before we gradually move toward the shorter, quieter days of the year.

It feels like a beautiful moment to pause and ask:

What am I ready to bring forward—and what might I be ready to release?

Fall Through the Lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Five Element theory, Fall is associated with the metal element and with the lungs and large intestine. Energetically, these systems offer us a beautiful metaphor for the season:

The lungs receive.

We breathe in what nourishes us.

The large intestine releases.

We let go of what we no longer need.

Fall is also traditionally associated with the emotion of grief or sadness. This doesn't mean Fall should make us sad or that experiencing these emotions means something is wrong. Rather, this tradition recognizes that loss, release and change are natural parts of being human.

And nature gives us the perfect teacher.

A tree doesn't struggle to hold every leaf forever. It releases when the time is right.

Perhaps we can practice doing the same.

Breathe In. Let Go.

Try this simple practice wherever you are.

Place your feet on sacred ground and allow your body to relax.

Take a slow breath in through your nose.

Imagine receiving something you need right now—peace, calm, love, clarity or simply fresh air.

Then exhale slowly.

As you breathe out, imagine releasing something you don't need to carry.

-Tension.

-Worry.

-An old expectation.

-Something unfinished.

-Or perhaps nothing in particular at all.

Simply breathe.

Inhale: I receive.

Exhale: I release.

Repeat several times and notice how you feel.

Calm Starts Here

Throughout September we've explored the idea that calm doesn't have to be complicated.

-It can begin with a breath.

-A little tapping.

-A pause.

And now, as we enter Fall, perhaps calm can also begin with letting go.

We don't need to completely reinvent ourselves with every changing season. Sometimes the invitation is much gentler—

to listen, notice, release a little, and create space for what wants to come next.

As the leaves begin to drop, may we remember that letting go doesn't always mean losing something.

Sometimes it means making room. 🍁
